He’s sitting at the kitchen table sipping his morning coffee.
His visiting mother is washing her hands in the sink and looks out the window.
Something catches her eye that doesn’t make sense.
“Son, what’s in the yard there?
It looks to be tearing up the grass everywhere.”
Without looking up from his warm mug, he responds,
“Don’t know, but as destructive as it is,
It comes in here and cooks amazing meals like a wiz.”
His mom dries her hands while responding,
“But are the meals worth the destruction?
Have you considered allowing something else in with a better function?
I see no fence here…No established boundary there
Maybe consider putting one in, you’ll be happier than you appear”
After giving it some thought, he did just that. He had a length of fence installed. The creature left and he felt happier.
Some time later, he’s sitting on the front porch, sipping beers with his dad. His dad notices something down the driveway.
“Son… What’s that breaking up your driveway?
What they are doing doesn’t make sense, I must say.”
After acknowledging his dad with a nod and waving a fly from his face he says,
“You have a point Dad. I haven’t noticed it before,
I’ve been blinded by how it makes me feel, there is always something physically new in store
Looks like I need another wall, I didn’t notice this empty side
Maybe then a deeper sense of peace I will find.”
After his dad left, he did just that. He installed more fence with a subtle gate. After the creature left, he felt happier.
Some time passed. Now he’s eating dinner. A dinner that was prepared by a beautiful guest. It was the guest’s treat. They sit across from each other and trade a smiles, acknowledging the peace between them. They have both finished eating. He lets out a sigh, signaling how relaxed he truly is. The guest decides to ask,
“What did I do for you to open the front gate for me?
I noticed the damage from others around yet here we are smiling.”
He picked up the empty plates and placed them in the sink. He pauses to look out the window and sees the damage from those before. He pours two glasses of wine and ushers his guest towards the porch. His guest is patiently and gently awaiting his response. They sit. After his sip, he says,
“I recklessly cared for things that were reckless towards me
The happiness I felt came with destruction I chose not to see
After the walls and fences went up, you stayed respectful
Upon letting you in a few times, you remained careful
If that doesn’t explain it, I doubt more words will
Be mindful of your glass there… You don’t want it to spill”
She smiles at his attentiveness and they share a kiss. They both ease back into their seats, holding hands, and enjoying the peace.
