  • Can I Sit With You?

    Poetry, The Usual

Can’t they tell I want to sit alone?
I mean I found this seat on my own

I avoided the loud talkers who attract other loud talkers
Where the smallest jokes generate the biggest laughs

The space I solely found to recharge
Is invaded with comments and questions like a barrage

I’m fine with shared silence or paired peace
Not so much with forced topics that never seem to cease

I’m getting better at finding the nooks and crannies
To ensure peace and time with only myself, I, and me

I’m starting to be asked less and less
Looks like they are getting the hint that I don’t want to take on their mess

I’m not asked anymore, my perimeter has grown
They aren’t sitting with me anymore, what have I shown?

I am writing poems about love again
Does this mean that I’m ready for love again?

Ready to expose myself to the warmth of connection
Ready to expose myself to the spark of contention

To share the flame from within… A flame I have carefully cultivated
To again write about thoughts and emotions that must be articulated

Putting myself inside of an iron maiden that transforms into a Russian doll
With infinite layers, infinite wonders, infinite spoils, and infinite toils

Am I writing poems about love again
Or is it love that is ready for me again?

  • Get Some Sleep

    April 9, 2024
    Poetry, The Usual

Good night boys, get some sleep
My frustration is about your future
I simply want you to, in every way, be better than me

Even before you could walk, I have wanted you to be better than me
To not suffer the way I have
    To not approach things ignorantly

Be sure to get some sleep. I’m always here listening for you
I wake up in the middle of the night
Thinking I heard one of you, but I have no clue

Get that rest because there are people after you
It’s not on purpose, don’t fret
The good hearts you have people will force themselves on you like a shoe

Please get some sleep before it’s too late
I hope you know that I’m your biggest warrior
Maybe your biggest worrier, maybe there’s too much on my plate

Babies please sleep for it’s for your own good
I’m sorry for yelling and being forceful
I may lose my cool, but a better you is a better mood

Please help me sleep…now go and conquer this world
I know you will, just be consistent
I’ll be cheering you on as you make this place your pearl

    How are you surprised
    It died
    When you decided
    To sacrifice I
    …

    Poetry, The Usual

    I saw you smile today…
You and I were talking and the conversation was delightful
We’ve been talking for a while now and it makes my heart full

    I saw you shocked today…
When I got down on one knee to ask you to be my only
I knew it to be true. You couldn’t believe it…it was lovely

    I saw you frown today…
You didn’t like what I did or lack thereof
I’m still learning you and you me. We just need to concentrate on our love

    I saw your phone today…
Different conversations with past, present and future lovers
I do my best to keep it moving and to hold it within

I saw your empty hand today…
You were upset and took off what I gave you…Set it on the dresser…
You’re blaming me and I’m confused. What’s causing this to get messier?

    I saw your key today…
The key to your own place to do whatever it is you want
So easy it is for you to go. Was I ever what you wanted?

I saw your social media today…
Looking for a hint of regret or anything at all
Maybe there could be a clue as to what caused our fall

    I saw a smile today..
And it was my own… The sadness, stress, and weight has melted away
I’m remembering who I am before I ever saw you smile that day

    Poetry, The Usual

    By H. Jerome Alexander

The brightest smiles have come long after the darkest moments, the prettiest eyes have cried the most tears and the largest and purest of hearts have been filled to maximum capacity with the hurt and confusion from lack of understanding.

Yet, while occupying the same space, our physical presence remains as quiet as the second that it took for me to split seconds into thirds just for us to spend extra time with one another in silence due to sound merely being a distraction; the pastime and interruption of our souls speaking ancient love languages of quick-witted logic and commitment.

I would always rather fail any day with you instead of winning most days with someone else.  A promise rooted in the belief system of you and I and extreme clarity seen by hearts and not our eyes.

    Poetry, The Usual

Will you stand in the storm with me?
With branches breaking, tin roof quaking
Stand here with me, it is calm with you
With you here next to me, there is no panicking

    Scary storm we are having
It appears to be coming in waves
I see fear in you eyes, but I have seen worse
Such a storm has changed how you behave

I recognize the fear because in a different storm
    That fear…it surrounded me
    You stood with me then
And danced in the storm gracefully

I never forgot and I learned my own dance and grace
Time passed as different storms came and went
    Interesting weather we are having
Standing with each other is time well spent

With lightning flashing and thunder booming
I forget about them with you here
There is less fear with you near
Looking into your eyes, it is all clear

Like with any storm, this too will eventually end
No storm has lasted forever… None!
And when it is over with clear skies surrounding us
There you are, standing with me. I will ask, “Wasn’t that fun?”

“Take that thing off! It’s nearly supper time!”
He’s aware of the time and is frustrated with the reminder

Reminded to shed the outer layer because it’s deemed “outside only”
According to who? Why eliminate this layer?

Like a mascot under their masks, he feels protected
The weight, the warmth, the well-being that comes

Each with their own impression and characteristics
With the right one on, he can’t miss
He feels more like him by roughly 12%

Those cooler temperatures can’t come soon enough
It’s time to release those different expressions

The right one will make the ensemble feel right
Without it, something just doesn’t feel right

The perfect gift is yet another one
Something that could very well be handed down to a daughter or a son

Even with the sun out, best to bring one…just in case
The zero chance of rain could change within the forecast

His collection grows, each with their own purpose
There may be too many or maybe too little
He doesn’t care either way because with one, it’ll be a great day

    Observations, The Usual

“Hello! Welcome!” He greets his new roommate. The roommate is terribly jet-lagged and quickly falls asleep. As he begins to get ready for bed, someone bursts into the room, “I believe this is where I’m sleeping.” He tells him that someone just moved in an hour ago and that he must be mistaken. The gentleman leaves only to come back and insists that it is correct. Three to a room. The time he has been quietly dreading has come to pass. He has had this room to himself for weeks and within the span of one evening,  now has two roommates. He is annoyed with the unexpected third addition, but after sleeping it off and rearranging the room a bit, he comes to terms with it.  By the third day, he notices an odor. He gives it some thought. He deduces that it isn’t the first fellow who bathes in cologne. It is the other fellow and this guy sleeps above him on the top bunk. He reminds himself that the smelly fellow is leaving soon. Sure enough, after a couple of weeks, the pungent roommate departs.

One day at work, he walks into the bathroom to discover local workers attempting to fix a urinal. This particular urinal has been out of commission since Thanksgiving.  While the workers are talking to each other in their native tongue, they are looking at a power tool. He has never seen this tool before. It looks as if the workers are figuring out how to use it at this very moment. To avoid a potentially smelly disaster, he high tails it outta there.  Fortunately, no disaster occurred, but the urinal has yet to be fixed.

He has been doing his best to stay fit.  After being unable to get over the 5 mile mark, he’s finally able to knock out mile 6 then 7. He is sore but feels accomplished. Mile 5 was a mental hurdle he has been struggling with. After some thought, he realizes that this is the farthest he’s ever ran.  He’s hopeful that miles 8, 9, and 10 are on the horizon.

One day while sitting at his desk, he turns to his co-worker and asks if he has heard the guy in the community bathroom who is constantly gagging while he is brushing his teeth. With eyes wide, his co-worker quickly pivots towards him in his chair and says, “Yes! What is it with that guy? I keep thinking he’s going to throw up. It’s so intense.” They laugh and share their experiences of hearing this random guy viciously gagging. He learns that many others have heard this person gagging with the intensity of a 600 horsepower engine with no exhaust. The legend of Gag Man. From that point on, him and his co-worker randomly make gagging sounds. UuuiiiccCCKKK!!!

He’s sitting on the roof in the shade while reading a book. After completing a few pages, he notices the sound of a lawn mower at work in the distance. He smiles at where the sound takes him. He closes his eyes. He is sitting in his backyard on a cool, breezy, weekend afternoon. The smell of someone grilling in the distance and freshly cut grass catches his nose. He can hear his neighbors mowing their lawns with kids cackling and dogs barking. It reminds him of home and of his ever approaching return to it. With a smile, he opens his eyes

His halfway mark has come and gone. It’s a bittersweet feeling. He has enjoyed plenty and understands the growing need to get back home.

    The Usual

“I apologize for driving too fast over the barriers.” He’s in a vehicle with his boss, who’s departing soon, and a driver. His boss says, “Yeah, those barriers were killing the shit out of people back home.” The three of them laugh. Shortly after that, he is bossless.

It’s Christmas afternoon. He’s smoking a Monte Crisco cigar. He found it barely used and, after cutting off the used bit, takes it for himself. He considers it a Christmas gift. He is with his colleagues when he hears a boom. His colleagues stand up and observe, as does he. He can see a plume of dust on the other side of a barrier wall. The people closest to the boom run towards and inside of a bunker. He’s waiting on an alarm to sound. Nothing. He waits for another boom. Nothing. Minutes pass. Folks exit the barrier. Him and his colleagues shrug and sit back down. After a few days, he learns that it was likely from an exploding tire. All booms spur concern.

He’s standing in the office waiting to pass a document to his new boss. A group of three foreign officers are crowded around the always popular espresso machine. As he’s waiting, he hears a slosh of water hit the ground. He thinks someone has knocked over their full cup of coffee. He walks over to offer help. Turns out that one of the officers was attempting to dump the overflow tray into the trash can and missed. They are looking at each other in dismay.

Upon learning what happened, he cannot stop laughing. As he is laughing, the officers begin to clean the mess. They keep their straight faces and occasionally glance at him. He hands the document over to his boss and heads back to his desk, chuckling along the way.

The holidays and the New Year have come and gone followed by another significant date. The 20 year anniversary since the day he joined the military. He has always heard people say how fast it goes, but he certainly feels like 20 years has passed by. When checking his social media feed, he comes across the pictures and snippets of retirement ceremonies from fellow service members he has met along the way. He feels like he’s one of the last standing. It’s an interesting time. He feels like everyone is moving on to their second chapter. He knows his time is coming but is committed to completing at least another 4 years before finishing this chapter. With a bittersweet feeling he’s approaching his halfway point in this foreign land. What else does this place have in store for him? He’s eager to find out. Onward and upward…
